How we identified "Advertising"
The 2du app makes a hard divide between "general information" and "advertising". In deciding which category to put a piece of media, we were identifying advertising as either 1) prices are shown, or 2) the content is very focused on their product or service.
Advertising or not?: There were some media publishers where it wasn't easy deciding which category to put them in. For example, you may see some hotels in the Local Media section, and some hotels in the Local Advertising section. One hotel might be in the Local Media section because it is a community landmark due to location, great food, entertainment, architecture, or general awesomeness ! While other hotels can be just as cool, but their marketing is a bit more direct with their pricing visibility so they are in the Local Advertising section.
Other media publishers such as Tripadvisor definitely have great content, but single pages usually combine tourism information + user reviews together with hotels & tours with full pricing info. We had to make case by case decisions regarding these pages to balance whether the tourism info was so helpful that we wanted to include them in the Local Media section. So, some of the Tripadvisor pages are in both categories.
Content Sorting: Our design strategy was:
- Local Media contains primarily COOL content such as sunsets, live music videos, and beautiful travel info
- Local Advertising contains primarily PRACTICAL content such as trip planning, solutions to daily needs, specific restaurant suggestions, and flights & accommodation bookings.
